This is true for many areas, not just Cleveland.

The comparison of Rockford and Chicago to Cleveland and Akron is misplaced given that Rockford-Chicago is about 80 miles and Cleveland-Akron is 30. Lots of people claim to be from Chicago when, in fact, they're from collar counties etc.

The difference is people from Actual Cleveland are keen to add the suburbs. Typically city. Residents chaff at Suburbanites claiming the city proper.

Clevelanders are quick to bolster their region which makes it unique among cities which tend to gatekeep
