Founded by a couple of University of Wisconsin students in 1988, the weekly paper prints “fake news” often of a hilarious, political, or borderline offensive nature. In 2001 the Onion moved the head office to the Big Apple and its Chicago office is its largest, but it remains near and dear to Madisonians and as always, free. Pick up a copy for a good laugh. The Web site, which nabs over 4 million readers each month, presents some different content and includes audio/video material as well. The paper’s A.V. Club insert reviews movies, music, and previews upcoming concerts in an irreverent but honest style. Free.
