Parks & Recreation - Reno, Nevada

76. Nevada Highway 431

City: Reno, NV
Category: Parks & Recreation

Description: You can ski, snowshoe, sled, and tube on a little-used tract of heavily wooded land along the northwest side of NV 431 just past the entrance to Mt. Rose–Ski Tahoe ski resort. A Forest Service road winds through the trees, providing a packed surface with a gentle incline. For more ups and downs, especially for tubes and sleds, try the slopes alongside the more level surface of the road. You’ll find parking at a pullout on the right side of the road as you’re traveling from Reno to Incline Village, about a mile from the ski resort. I don’t recommend snowmobiling here, however. To reach the area, take NV 431 east for about 11 miles from Incline Village, or west for 22 miles from Reno.

79. Rink On The River

City: Reno, NV
Category: Parks & Recreation
Telephone: (775) 334-2262
Address: 10 North Virginia Street

Description: Almost resembling a progressive dinner, the skating rink in downtown Reno has been moved from location to location over the past several years. It seems finally to have found a permanent home, however, on the site of where the historic Mapes Hotel once stood in downtown Reno. As an entertainment option, it’s relatively cheap, with admission of $6 for skaters age 13 and older and $4.00 for those ages 3 through 12 and 55 and older. Skate rental is $2. The rink also offers season passes, group rates, and lessons. If you’re into skating, it’s worth checking out. After all, where else can you do triple lutzes under the glare of all that casino neon? The rink is open daily during the winter. Check the Web site or call for the schedule of skating sessions.

80. Truckee River Regional Park

City: Reno, NV
Category: Parks & Recreation
Telephone: (530) 587-6172

Description: A new ice rink with all the comforts and ambience of a first-class skating experience has outclassed the natural pond that residents of Truckee skated on for years. Set among the pines along the Truckee River, the rink has an ice chilling system to create ice that even Dorothy Hamill would approve of. You can skate daily for just $6 a day (all day), in addition to $2 for skate rental. Call (530) 587-6172 or visit the Web site to find out when it opens for the season and for hours of operation.
