Description: Located in the Barbara and Bill Richardson Pavilion that was added to UNM Hospital in 2007, this is new Mexico’s only pediatric rehabilitation hospital, with a 24-bed inpatient unit. Despite its spanking-new high-tech environment, Carrie Tingley Hospital has a 70-year history. Carrie Tingley was New Mexico’s first lady, wife of Governor Clyde Tingley, and the couple originally moved from Ohio to New Mexico in the hope that the climate would alleviate Carrie’s tuberculosis. The Tingleys were known for helping the sick and especially disabled children in need of medical care. The Carrie Tingley Hospital opened in 1937 in Hot Springs, later renamed Truth or Consequences, south of Albuquerque, and moved to the city in 1981. In 1989 it became part of UNM. Through inpatient care and 21 specialized clinics, the hospital treats children and adolescents with long-term physical disabilities, musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions, developmental issues, brain and spinal cord injuries, and many other conditions.
