Description: UNM Hospital operates the state’s only Level I Trauma Center, caring for almost 90,000 emergency patients each year, and over 450,000 outpatients. The hospital is the primary teaching hospital for the university’s school of medicine and has ranked in the 100 top-performing hospitals in the United States. The hospital handles general surgical procedures, chronic-disease management, and acute-care cases. In 2007 the impressive new Barbara and Bill Richardson Pavilion opened at the hospital, adding nearly 500,000 square feet of emergency and clinical space, and incorporating the latest surgical, imaging, and laboratory technology. As a research hospital UNM Hospital participates in numerous advanced clinical trials across many specialties. The American Hospital Association named UNM Hospital as one of the 100 Most-Wired Hospitals and Health Systems in the United States in 2009. Although this sounds like they perhaps have very good Wi-Fi access for patients, it actually refers to the use of IT tools to integrate and communicate medical information, thus improving the quality of health care and patient service and safety. The hospital was the only one in New Mexico to make the list in 2009, the sixth consecutive year that UNM was cited, out of seven years in all. Only eight other American organizations have matched that record.
