Description: The state’s first hospital dedicated to the prevention and treatment of heart disease, the Heart Hospital of New Mexico opened in 1999. It’s owned by MedCath Corporation in partnership with the New Mexico Heart Institute, the largest cardiovascular medical group in the region. The hospital offers a full range of heart-care services and prides itself on its patient-centered approach. In 2008 it was the only New Mexico hospital to receive the Outstanding Patient Experience Award by Healthgrades, based on a survey of patients. The survey reported patients’ experience of doctor and nurse communications, speed of responsiveness, medical information, the cleanliness and noise levels in hospitals, and instructions for postdischarge care. Heart Hospital of New Mexico came in within the top 5 percent for patient experiences out of 2,592 hospitals across the country. The two-story hospital is built on an eight-acre campus, with 55 patient rooms and sleeper beds available for family members wanting to stay close to the patient. There are three operating rooms, four cardiac catheterization laboratories, and seven emergency and trauma rooms. The hospital’s performance is the fastest in New Mexico for the time from arrival at the 24-hour emergency room to the time of treatment. Programs to support patients at the Heart Hospital of New Mexico include a pet therapy program and a therapeutic music program. The hospital offers a reasonably priced full HeartScan screening package for early detection of heart disease.
