Description: Since 1983 owner Mike O’Connor’s entire focus is on the needs of both birds and bird-watchers. This is the place to buy a bird feeder—the store carries more than 100, not to mention tons of bird feed to fill them! You can’t be a bird-watcher without binoculars, and Bird Watcher’s carries some 40 types. It also stocks a comprehensive selection of bird books and T-shirts, socks, door knockers, welcome mats, sun catchers, magnets, gift wrap, and note cards. Tell the super-friendly staff a joke, and they’ll give you a gift. The shop is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the rest of the year you’ll find the daily hours (often down to the second) posted on a board out front.

Description: Here’s your chance to see a potter at work, as this is not only Steve Kemp’s store but also his studio and has been since 1978. His varied designs, often inspired by nature, include lamps, sinks, tiles, bird feeders, fountains, and sculpture, and many of them are made with Nauset Beach sand. Kemp also does unique bas relief signs, several of which can be seen at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster. His functional pieces, including dinnerware, are lead-free and safe for the oven, dishwasher, and microwave. Open daily in season, Mon to Sat off-season.

10. Academy Of Performing Arts

Description: Founded in 1975, the academy stages an impressive schedule of productions throughout the year—musicals, dramas, comedies, and everything in between—many of them works by local and regional playwrights. The building itself dates to 1873 and once served as the Orleans Town Hall. General admission tickets for a main performance are $20. A children’s theater show is presented Fri from July through Aug at 10 a.m. General admission to the children’s show is $10. The academy also offers a plethora of courses in dance, music, and acting at its teaching facility on Giddah Hill Road.

Description: The Addison Holmes Gallery represents a number of acclaimed fine artists, including Laura Griffith, Ann Trainor Dominque, and Garry Gilmartin. The two-level gallery, in a former home on Town Cove, is bright and inviting. It’s open year-round, with shorter hours in winter.

12. Kely Knowles Rock Harbor Art Gallery

Description: This beautiful barn, just a few doors down from Rock Harbor, houses the works of talented husband-and-wife artists Kely and David Knowles. Kely Knowles exhibits her luminous, shimmering watercolors along with pen-and-ink renderings and greeting cards. Her husband carves unique wood sculptures, including unusual fish wall hangings. The gallery is open most of the time in summer and often in spring and fall or by appointment any time of year.

13. Left Bank Gallery

Description: For many years an institution in Wellfleet, the Left Bank’s opening of an Orleans location was welcomed by local art lovers. In addition to paintings, sculpture, textiles, and ceramics by local, regional, and nationally known artists, you’ll find gorgeous handcrafted jewelry. The gallery also has a third room, which is filled with the works of a new slate of artists. The gallery is open seven days a week year-round, with reduced hours in the off-season.
