A Google Search turned up this:

Quote:
You may exchange your out-of-state beginner’s permit for a South Carolina beginner’s permit. However, if there is an exchange, you must have the permit for 180 days before you can apply for a license. The time that you held the out-of-state beginner’s permit will count toward the 180 day period. If your beginner’s permit has expired, you must take the vision and knowledge tests to obtain a South Carolina beginner’s permit.

What is it that you need to go to downtown Fort Mill for? There is very lttle to offer there and you would be better off heading into Tega Cay or Charlotte. The state line is 5 miles up 77N and Tega Cay area is -2 miles away from Baxter.

"Downtown" Fort Mill doesnt have a lot, a few small shops, Comporium and Hardees,. thats about it. Baxter Village has a lot of upscale stores, and a few eateries and such plus right outside of it is Lowes, tons of fast food, Harris Teeter and such. If you were to live in Baxter Village, you wouldnt need to get to downtown Fort Mill much, if at all. If you dont mind walking, or have a bike, its quite a nice walk/ride.

from the DMV link provided by another resident, if you own a car, you have to transfer the tag within 45 days.
If other family members are coming too, and they have regular license their license is good for 90 days, that's license, not license plate.

As far as downtown, here are the HOT spots:
a barber shop
some antique shops
police and fire and magistrate's office
Hardee's has a monopoly.......
You'll find a small Chamber of Commerce office inside a red train caboose.
Main post office
a few real estate agencies

Someone mentioned Tega Cay.....it is an actual city in itself....

As far as a 2 mile radius of Baxter you'll find
CVS
Walgreen
Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, Bi-Lo, and Food Lion grocery stores
Walmart
Lowes
Pizza Hut
many more restaurants.
doctors offices
banks
pretty much whatever you need is close to Baxter.

once you learn your way around....downtown will be for only special needs.
