I have a friend who moved to Charlolle and her son is behind. My son is learning the basics such as letter names and sounds. Do they teach reading in K. We'll be moving in the summer and I need to know if I need to play catch up.::

My oldest DD is in 1st grade, and we moved 1 month ago from Charlotte to Fort Mill. We loved McAlpine (Charlotte) and love Gold Hill. Now to curriculums (or is it curricula?

They taught reading in K in Clt - with concentration on the mechanics. Kids who couldn't read at all at the beginning of K were slightly behind, but I don't think any actually suffered for it - they caught up fast. (I think it's ridiculous that kids should have to come into K already reading, but what do I know?) In K they worked on the basic math concepts - patterns, grouping and organization.
In Clt, they really picked up on reading fluency in 1st grade, and worked a lot on vocabulary, phonics, etc. Now that we've moved, she's in an environment that concentrates far more on comprehension, while reading books that are far simpler mechanically. As far as math goes, she was a bit behind on mechanics when she started at GHES. (It's almost the flip side of the literacy approach.) In Clt they concentrated more on the concepts that guide math, where at GHES she's working heavily on addition, subtraction, units of measure, etc. She had a math test last week on double digit addition! Her first test on her 7th birthday - it hardly seems fair.
