Does anyone know of anyone that offers something like this in the area? My son is 5 and I would really want him to learn gun safety. We don't have any in our house and don't know if we'll ever get one, but I want him to understand how to respect guns in case he ever comes across one at a friend's house.

Thanks!

The biggest thing your son needs to know if he comes across a gun at a friend's house is to never touch it and that he must tell an adult ASAP and/or leave the home immediately. Especially at 5, those are the most important things he needs to know. We have guns in our home and my son started shooting at age 6, but when it comes to finding a gun at a friend's house or anywhere else those are the rules we have for him.

If you don't have a gun and, most likely, aren't going to ever have one then at this age he doesn't need to know the mechanics of guns. He simply needs to know that they can kill him and that he doesn't need to be around one unless you are right by his side. Very simple.

If you decide to get a gun and go shooting, Carolina Rifle and Pistol Club offers some great classes and encourages children (while being highly supervised) on the range.

Here is a great e-book about gun safety for kids.

Thanks for the info and the link!

We may be getting a gun for sport and semi-protection. One of our friends works for Remington and has the occasional friends and family sweet deal that comes up

We know that living in SC chances are that he will more likely than not come across a gun at a friend's house and we need to have him respect guns and know what to do in those situations. When we lived in NJ it wasn't as common.

Maybe look into a hunters education class. They cover a great bit of gun saftey.

NRA has a youth safety program called Eddie Eagle. The NRA should be able to put you in touch with a local instructor that could give you more information.
