Hello everyone! My partner and I are moving to Rock Hill, SC in June of 2011. I have been looking for rental houses and jobs at the nearby hospitals. I am just wondering, is there a "bad" area of town to stay away from. We have had the worst luck in 2010...2 cars have been stolen, being laid off. It has been tough. We are trying to move in between our families so we can see them more often. I would just like any kind of help with a new town. Thank you so much!
If you can, take some time to drive around the different parts of town. There are a lot of houses for rent in nice older neighborhoods these days. The areas around Piedmont hospital/Ebenezer, Cherry Park, and Winthrop University might be good starting points. Some areas downtown can be a bit dicey, but others are quite safe. Take a good look at the way the homes and yards are kept up and it should be pretty obvious. If there are any particular neighborhoods you are interested in, ask away!
If you're in corrections, I would suggest you not live in the town where you work. Fort Mill, Tega Cay are better bets. Rock Hill is trying so hard to be something but almost half the population lives at or below the poverty line. I've lived here for 10 years and am dying to leave. Don't move to Longview Oaks (near Piedmont), avoid the Saluda area at all costs. The Newport area has new developments but has only a Walmart, a mexican place and a pizza place. Fort Mill will have a new hospital (and has excellent school system). You will find more new comers but more educated folks. Charlotte Medical System (CMS) is a very good hospital system. It depends on what kind of commute you and your partner are willing to put up with. If you're from the South, this area won't be a surprise for you. Me? I've got one foot out the door. Good luck.
