Hello,

My wife and I are taking a trip to WY this summer, to be more exact, to the area around Lander WY. Aside the fact that airline tickets to WY almost cost more than to Europe we also noticed that a car rental for one week would be about $700! (crazy!). Anyways, does anyone know of any way to get from Jackson Hole to Lander, WY? Bus, train, anything?

Thanks!

no trains in Teton County . Story aboutCliff Hansen and his Dad where in Cheyenne to a Stockgrowers convention and Joe Watt asked where they were staying and how they got there. They said they brought their bed roll and were sleeping at the park . They had went over Teton Pass to Driggs Idaho on over the the railroad and road down to Rock Springs got on another train to Cheyenne there.
There are some buses that run thru Jackson. The Start bus but it haul labor in from Star Valley and Maybe Driggs. Not sure if Powder River has buses going east.

Do you have the time to fly into a major airport such as Salt Lake City or Denver, rent a car there, and then drive to your intended destinations?

Then you'd have ground transportation at your convenience as well as far better airfare and rental car rates, and could drive through a lot of interesting areas of Wyoming.

Other than renting a car getting to Lander from Jackson your pretty much SOL.
It is expensive in the summer as that's their big season for making money. Still accounts for around 70% of Teton County's visitor revenue. You might consider flying to SLC and renting the car there, I assume it's more reasonable, it's about a 4/5 hour drive to Jackson. What about flying into Casper and renting a car?

I would call the JH Chamber or better yet the Lander Chamber for the best info in a timely fashion. Phone (800) 433-0662.

Thanks - we are flying in from South Florida - believe it or not, the cheapest flights were into JH!

There's some subsidies involved from Wyoming's Dept of Aviation to help promote and support commercial aviation ... as well as the tourist industry in this state. Without the subsidy, public aviation would not be feasible in Wyoming as there's too little passenger demand to support it. We've had a lot of short haul airlines go broke in this state. There's been times where the airline had run out of credit at the airports and the pilots had to use their own personal credit cards to pay for the fuel so they could continue the flight on schedule.

Even the Denver (DIA) to Cheyenne 20 min puddle jumper turboprop flight is $100 per seat. A pretty daunting amount of money for the convenience of free parking in Cheyenne to get to DIA to connect to a more major flight. I've flown commercial to the West Coast or Texas destinations from Cheyenne and the Cheyenne-Denver-Cheyenne portion of the airfare was more money than the Denver to destination roundtrip airfare.
