I moved from Anchorage to Wyoming nearly 40 years ago. The winter temps here are similar, except not as constant. We have both colder and warmer days depending on the weather patterns. Winds across most of Wyoming are much more of a concern, but I don't think they're too bad in Star Valley. We do get much more sunshine than Anchorage!

Summers are very pleasant -- days are warmer, nights maybe a bit cooler -- and darker.

My family and I are looking to move to Afton in the next year or so. I would be interested in anything you would be willing to tell me. My husband does a lot of desk top publishing and is head of the marketing department for a bridge engineering company. I work at a center with children and teens that have multiple savere handicaps and love it. I feel the need to hear from locals because I know from my trips to the Victor and Tetonia Idaho areas (thats where my family is from) that what you can actually find on the web is not at all a fair representation of what you can find for housing or jobs.
Thanks for your advice and help.

Default Looking in Star Valley area

Hello all.

I have been seeking a safe haven from crime and ghetto areas. A place to watch the sun come up and go down. Looking for the most extreme conservative area. Commute is not a factor, as I work from home. I am okay with grocery stores being 30-45 mins away. I would love that mom and pop feel in a small country town. Another question could someone tell me what exactly does income restricted mean? Is that considered Section 8/Hud? I am only asking because, those areas I want to stay far far away from. I would be okay with living in a town as long as it's a town and not a city vibe. I also don't care about diversity, I would prefer there would be none. Any and all guidance would be appreciated. I am in my 50's so I don't need the night life. However, again that small town after work local safe bar for a cold beer is quite fine with me.

Was going to say this post is only 12 years old, and it covers SV to a point. Yes, Star valley changed. really lot since we sold a ranch and moved 5 years ago. Last 5 years it way more developed, lots of Subdivisions anything from 2 acre lots to the 35-acre developments. basely everywhere is probably 10-20 minutes or less to a store or gas station or even a school. Price has skyrocketed. There is other area that might work south of SV 50 miles is Cokeville, there small town up in the Big Horn Basin. Then the northeast corner of Crook and Weston Counties with their Black hills- to prairie country.

income-restricted and income-based housing offerings are not the same as Section 8 vouchers. The person pays, not the government. But who can get in or how much they pay is controlled by law. The terms can vary, so look at the details on property management site or ask directly.

Afton WY, typically 80-90 inches of snow per year that tends sticks around. Over 100 inches in 5 of last 10 years. Gets to zero or below about 40 times per year. Lower than -20 is to be expected occasionally.

Afton is 10-15% hispanic overall. Might be less in the smaller towns and will vary by exact location. Probably more or way more in some apartment buildings.
