Why does it have to be a real place?

I would think it would depend on the action of book. If it's something that needs a lot of people (not necessarily characters but if someone is going to get lost in the crowd, switch from hotel to hotel, whatever), probably any big city will do. Just pick one-also considering the climate of course-if you're going to need a snowstorm, Honolulu could be eliminated.

You'd just have to research which areas have the type of environment that fits the action.

If you want a more rural but still wealthy, parts of MA, Montana, CA...
If you want a place where the main characters are rich but people don't care, Maine.

and what does o.c stand for?

its more of a young crowd and the whole climate thing dosent really make a difference and o.c as in orange county

OK, I'll get you started.

Their names have to be Binky and Muffy. He's from London, she's from California. They live in Aspen, Colorado. He's old money, never had to lift a finger. College was a lark, he paid some geek to take his tests for him. He is a figure head for one his fathers many businesses. Yet claims to others that he is the brains behind it all. He claims to have been a high ranking member of the UK armed forces but was not. He bought some medals to show off. Muffy is the daughter of someone in show business. Her parents are getting old now, she rarely see them. Its too much trouble for her, it brings her down visiting sick people. They gave much of their money away to the arts. She resents them terribly for that. She tried acting but was so ill tempered she didn't get far. She blames her folks for that too, she should have been a star. Muffy and Binky are both cheating on each other. Binky with an airhead 20 year old that wants a career in pictures, her back up plan is to displace the wife. Muffy's love interest is her tennis instructor. A jock that wasn't quite good enough to be a pro, he hopes she will buy him his own club, or Binky will have a sudden heart attack. He'd like to be Lord of the manner. Binky knows about the tennis jock. But Muffy does not know anything about Binky's current side dish.

Their children are even more disgusting than they are. The daughter, Buffy, is a foul mouthed, chain smoking, multiple college drop out that treats everyone as if they are beneath her. Her drug dealing boyfriend, Dominic, keeps her in coke. She is addicted but in denial. Rumor has it she is pregnant. He's been in and out of prison and is involved with a gang. Their son, Dolph, is an alcoholic. He still gets behind the wheel loaded. Daddy pays for his pad and Hummer. And has kept him from losing his license, as he knows people in high places. Dolph is content to wait for his parents to kick off, so he does nothing. He's hoping his sister will kick off too, leaving it all for him. His dad constantly jumps on him for not being a ladies man. They don't know about his many strange fetishes. He pays escorts to show off as potential love interests, afraid dad will cut him out of the will if he finds out his perversions. They are a sick, rich tribe of white trash.

Small town America. Somewhere in the midwest. Perhaps a town near Omaha would be nice.

Oh, I vote for San Francisco! You could do A LOT with San Francisco as a setting. I'm reading a series of not-great fiction murder mysteries with San Francisco as the setting, and, because I lived near there for years and loved it so much, I keep reading the mysteries mainly because the author keeps mentioning famous street intersections and famous land marks. I can't think of another big city with wealthy people and plenty of drama -- except for New York and Los Angeles. No, I still vote for San Francisco. :-)

Good luck! Who knows where your book may lead you! Don't sell yourself short. You could be a famous author someday. And, since I 'dabble' in some writing myself and am pretty good at it, if you want to e-mail me privately, I'd be glad to give you an opinion after you've written a few chapters. Frankly, I'm quite interested. (And, altho' you don't know me and don't know if I'm telling you the truth, I do promise I won't 'lift' your material. I've also done some editing previously.)

Honeyqueen--Do you recall that old saying, "Write what you know"?

If you allow others to select a locale with which you are not familiar, your novel will never have the aura of authenticity that it would have if it was set in a city or town with which you are familiar. Yes, I know that you said that you would research the locale in order to learn about it, but that type of knowledge will never equal the knowledge of actually having been to a specific place, and your description of the locale will just not have the ring of truth about it.
