Its hard to stay in the I.T. world when thier are hardly any AS/400 jobs. I spent lots of time and money going to school learning this stuff only to see it vaporize after the year 2000. What now more school and money with unemployment money? yeah right.

IT still seems like a field with decently high salaries, etc. There is one place online where theyonly handle jobs over $100k.

It's totally a question of where you are; in our area they are literally getting hundreds of resumes for individual Tech jobs (and they appear to be very few of them) because so many companies have cut (literally thousands) IT people...

It also depends on what you do within IT.

Unlike many industries, the technology changes within IT at a rapid pace-- meaning a technology platform, language, etc may have been THE thing years ago, but not be as common today. Not to say that some organizations do not still continue to use those applications, languages, platforms-- but that as time passes not all will and there will be less and less.

I keep reading tons of stories on the big need for cybersecurity, cyberwarfare, encryption type people. This is where a lot of defense contractors are going. It seems that if a person has IT skills, that person could leverage those skills somehow to capitalize on the demand for these defense needs.

Most companies are moving away from AS/400 due to it's lack of open architecture and because it's IBM-centric.

Look at possibilities in banking and insurance, and learn some open architecture programming in the meantime if you want to stay in the I/T field.

I've read your posts with interest over the years because I used to live and work in Huntsville; (and I have for years had my own company so I am not looking for work in the business); but I would say that it looks like your view of how strong IT is is pretty biased by how defense work is going at the moment; and while I'm glad Huntsville is doing well; well you know that there have been hard times in Defense also...

That's the life of IT. Regardless of what you do in IT, gotta keep up with pace of change. Secondly, AS/400 is not really a huge field in need of demands.

Many companies in the health care field still use AS/400 database servers from what I've heard. And I use to work for a company where it was the primary mission-critical server...

Yeah, I was going to say that you really don't want to go to say Myrtle Beach, Vegas, or other heavy retail/hotel and say AS/400 doesn't matter...you won't make it out alive...
