I've been interested in learning web design and also creating HTML emails and having been in the job market, I see many positions for marketing managers that incorporate those skills, as well as web content manager positions where the manage corporate websites. This is something I'm very interested in.

After speaking to some designer friends (some graphics, some web), they agree that getting a certificate in web development is not necessary and that employers just want to see that you have the knowledge and experience and encouraged me to learn on my own.

So besides HTML, CSS and Javascript, does anyone know of anything else I'd need to learn to manage web content? Does anyone have any info on the field? I can't seem to find anything specific to it online. I'm assuming its a new progressive position.

Thoughts??

I don't know how "progressive" it is but in most larger organizations, and some smaller ones that serve as provider of information and services, there is need for some one with the skills and experience to not just be able to present attractive web content, but have a somewhat technical understanding of a variety of issues.

There are several large vendors of 'content management' software that may incorporate access control, versioning, hierarchical indexing, search capabiliites, library style cross referencing, and other features that will enhance content delivery. Some systems also incorporate tools for authoring content, collaboration, designing marketing campaigns, consolidating information, and serving as piece of the overall web application strategy for an organization.

There are formal programs of study in this field for those who may have a background in library science or other information fields. Knowledge of the sort of MBA level marketing terminology can also be very helpful.

From a technical perspective it would be helpful to research "content management' and gain experience with the software tools that have leadership in the marketplace. Content management system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.net / php? You can also just become very good at one of the systems. i.e. a SharePoint developer or Peoplesoft developer. Although that will sort of silo you into one area.... but if you're good.... you can ask for big cash. A buddy of mine picked up SharePoint and actually started his own business doing portals for people. Of course, it's not like he just went through the motions .. he has a knack for this stuff and loves it - so he was willing to work at it all the time.

Keep in mind there's a difference in being able to make/create the content and knowing how to actually market the products.
