No answers? I guess all the HVAC techs must be at work.
Mr. Azoria has been an HVAC tech for nearly 30 years. The early years were a little lean but there has always been work. He has a great union job right now as a building engineer, but if he were to leave he'd have another job tomorrow. There seems to be a shortage of HVAC techs.
He has taken some update courses the last couple of years, although he learned the trade in the Navy. The instructors for his recent classes were his age (50ish) and they had conversations about how there was a dearth of newlings coming up in the trade. Somehow HVAC seems to be an overlooked trade for younger workers.
We also went overseas working in HVAC. There is a lot of opportunity.
I think most current technical programs are two years for a HVAC degree/certificate, although I'm sure this varies from place to place.
The bigger money in HVAC seems to be in DDC controls (? I think that what it's called). These are the electronic controls for ventillation systems particularly crucial in computer rooms. It's specialized stuff that requires specific training. Good money there. If he did DDC we'd be sitting in the catbird's seat.
