It's funny but sometimes annoying the assumptions people make about your career or educational background when you tell them about it. For example someone might ask me what I majored in. I say computer information systems. Usually their next question is, "Hey. So I'm having this problem with my computer blah blah.." Sorry, but I didn't say I was a computer technician. Even if I were I probably wouldn't give out free advice.
Then my family members who mean well will see jobs posted online and send me a link to them. It's hard to explain to them what my qualifications are in a way that they would understand, so I ask them not to bother anymore. I kept getting emails from jobs that wanted 7-10 yrs experience in technologies I never touched, or descriptions of fields I never studied such as computer hardware engineering or artificial intelligence. This happen to anyone else?
when i tell people I studied marketing in school and got my bachelor's, they assume that either I want to go into sales or advertising, as if that is the only two options in the field. Most people think marketing is sales, but notice how marketing jobs never pay commission while sales jobs always do. People cant seem to tell the difference between the two. People always say, "well you dont seem like a marketing guy to me" because I am not a high energy, overly enthusiastic person.
Most people want free advice or (the best one) most people assume I'm 'sizing them up'. I can tell, midway through our conversation, after I reveal what I do for a living (therapist), they tend to clam up about certain issues. I think we all have our insecurities- no one wants to be judged but I mean, really. We're having a casual conversation- don't be so guarded!
