I must confess I haven't had to drive more than 27miles to work (54miles combined) but I am currently considering an opportunity that is 55miles out on the busiest stretch of road in the city (traffic anytime of day) so I am guessing it will take a min of 1.5hrs each way if am very lucky otherwise 2+ hrs easy. A former colleague use to drive 100miles each way, just wondering how much commute is too much for a job that pays ~$50K/yr. The bus does not service me because I am going out of the city as opposed to into the city.

I did a 3+ hour daily commute for a couple of years, it was so not worth it--for more than that.

Of course if it was that or not work, I'd probably do it, but find another job asap.

I've done some long commutes...Atlanta is famous for them...but they were contract work so I knew it would end plus the pay was really good.

I wouldn't do it again I think 45 min to an hour one way is plenty.

For me, it's less about the number of miles and more about the DURATION of the commute. I currently live 12 miles from work, and my commute takes 20 minutes. That's great. I'm fine with that.

I don't think I could stomach more than 30 minutes one way...especially if that 30 minutes is all stop-and-go. I'd go insane.

(We're starting to deal with this at work, as my company is outgrowing our space and are looking into relocation. Ugh. I dread it.)

Well my husband drives on average 300km a day for work. We live in a rural area and he works in the city. We figured out that the money he makes in the city and pays for the gas is still worth it than if he worked local and not pay for gas. But I own a gas station so there is a little help there.

Working for the company he does he gets $30hr where if he was to work local it would be half that, and if he has to travel further the boss pays his gas. So he will continue to work in the city

The longest I have ever commuted was 32 miles each way and it took 60-120 minutes each way. It was HORRIBLE.

In Atlanta a 3 hour commute is about 20 miles.

My commute from my home to my place of work is appx 20 minutes each way (11.3 miles). I used to report in Atlanta city proper and it was 45 minutes each way and 17 miles but I had to get on the expressway. I finally got enough senority to transfer to Smyrna where we reside. No more expressway. Straight down Concord Road to South Cobb Drive!

I would never do it. Not for any amount of money.

Eh... I do a lot more in my life than work the day job, so mileage aside, anything over 30 minutes, whether by train/car/walk/bike, etc. is too much of a time waster. That is another hour of my day right there and 20/hr would become 17.75 an hour in my mind. 1 hour 15 minutes commute both ways? All of a sudden I'm only making only 15 an hour, at that point I'd just assume make 12 at a local book store or something and have 2h30 minutes more in my day.
That being said, I don't own a car anymore and don't plan on living in a city I would need a car again in my life. Been there, done that... much better having more time and living close by work in a smaller place in the city vs. a bigger place and having to waste all the time commuting.
