We are also not allowed to use the word "problem" at work - we have to say "opportunity". Blech.

Today's job market is so ridiculous, you kind of have to be a comedian in order to get a job. Back when I started looking for work, the requirements were steady (experience, ability to talk to people, etc). Now after I read the "soft skills", I went ugh. I am very straight forward and yes, I do chuckle here and there, now they want you to "self depreciate" yourself, nah not me!

Default Speak like you want to be understood

This is an important post, these basic skills can take you a long way.

Particularly communicating clearly. So many people nowadays either speak poor English (as second language), or slangy English (from provincial patois), or muffled English (speaking too quiet, mumbling, or stressing the wrong words), or shy English (notice how many people are shy nowadays?).

People, let me tell you, speaking good, clear English as if you want to be heard and understood is extremely important! It can clinch your interview, or it can get you more work (and therefore opportunities and promotions) on the job.

Forget that $10,000 computer school, speak up, speak seriously, speak like you mean it, and things will come your way.

"Boss, we have a real opportunity in the basement. A water pipe is broken and is flooding the basement".

Every day there is a new laundry list of 'what you need' to get the job. I am so sick of it.

I dress well, speak clearly, have an education, have experience, have a decent sense of humor, believe in myself and my abilities, work hard, try to help others and volunteer for extra work when employed, have a sense of ethics and follow the do unto others code.

If that is not enough...what is?

At my last job we had "problems" (which were not people related--like the above mentioned broken pipe) and "opportunities", which generally involved customer complaints, etc.

Where I work now we have "Holy crap we've got a huge freaking problem here boss!!" or silence. There doesn't seem to be much inbetween.

The ability to put together a simple grammatically correct sentence is important.
