I have worked for Macys for 8 years in Seattle, WA and I hate it. Get this. In 2001 I made 7.5 an hour as a new hire. 8 years later I am at 13.13 an hour.
My husband gets a good job offer cross country so off we go. I left Macys for a short period. I was hoping to find some other job other then retail. Well, I coud not find anything. The job market here sucks so I went back to Macys here in Memphis. This time I get offered $9.00 an hour! Some of us is just going backwards.
Sorry to hear that. Are you doing the same job now as you did in the Macy's before? With 8 years experience, did you try applying for something a little more senior like a Manager position? or even an Assistant Manager? I knew someone in school who got a Asst Manager position at Macys, training to be a Manager, and would've made about $55K as a Manager.
Yes, unfortunately out of the 55 people on the floor one or two make it to manager position! thru personal magnetism and luck and creativity! however the rest of you have to go to school and get designer degrees, business administration degrees, travel abroad certifications, etc....
Could it be because you're moving to a different area where wages are quite different? It might not be a knock on your experience, more like a cost of living difference.
The COL difference was my thought. Also I might be wrong, but isn't Macy's broken into two regions and the ones on the west coast are operated completely independently of the ones in the east--as if it's not even the same company?
Don't they pay commissions? Otherwise, thank god your married. What single person could survive on that income.
In many parts of TN housing is very inexpensive--rents for a nice 1BR apt are $400 a month. If you can't survive on $9/hour with rent like that, something's really wrong...

Yes Memphis cost of living is cheaper. But people without any experience, straight out of highschool gets the same pay as me.
