Speaking as a Social Worker, I also don't like human service companies that are run by Social Workers. Those are the unsuccessful or mediocre companies that are always in the red. My company has a great senior management who know good business, and they also respect us clinical people for what we do. They've learned a lot about providing quality services and we've learned a lot about important things like fiscal responsibility and leadership/management skills.
Not all non-profit human services are like what you've experienced, I'm glad to say. Good luck with the MSW. We need more SW's with a business sense to make up for the ones who give us a bad name.

Texdav, not all human services/ non-profits are directly connected to governments. The organizations that manage their finances well will be fine even when the economy takes a down turn, and State epople are getting laid off.
