For those of us who do, it's highly interesting and challenging work. I can assure you that there are large numbers of chemists, chemical engineers, and similar professions working for companies like Lever or P&G on the development and testing of cleaning products. I also expect they rate their job satisfaction rather highly.

Unfortunately our social-media-celebrity culture wants to portray as "boring" the intelligent hard working creative men and women who design, manufacture, and sell ACTUAL PRODUCTS; without whom all the rest of you would still be scratching in the earth trying to gather grubs for dinner.
Amen!
Also, it takes all sorts of people to make the world go round.

If you want to go into "development" then be sure you focus on the "organic" stream.

Um do you mean getting a degree in organic chemistry or do you mean aiming for a career in organic cleaning products rather than synthetic ones?? If it's the latter then why?

Not exactly cleaning products but Food Network's Rhett and Link visited Beyond Meat. While they had some chefs preparing different meals with the product, it did a bit of behind the scenes with food chemists, and all the depth of science, from molecular to colors to smells and sounds of food. It was a far cry from a couple of chefs mixing ingredients and "let's see what this tastes like." Those type of behind-the-scenes jobs are in all consumer products industries.

Thinking USBLS as-usual might be the best guide. Great insights there, I've peered at their trendlines for various occupations past c. 15 years.

Not sure what "cleaning products industry" means, but you know so that'll focus the search I'm sure. Only cleaning USBLS has is the labor aspect. Also depends who "they" are in this case. Think I'd look up the parent companies of various cleaning products, then job and career search as an idle pastime after narrowing down a specific profession in USBLS. And graduate level...something? Not sure what.

If doing the mad scientist routine to build something better in the basement, that's an entrepreneurial endeavor and may involve both chemistry and patent law (eventually). A great start is not to combine ammonia (NH3) and bleach (CL2), unless you want to create rocket fuel (hydrazine) and / or potentially lethal gas. Not a mistake one makes twice...or even once hopefully.
