Maybe you should be asking the right question-- Why is it that the US has 1/20th of the world's population, but 1/3rd of its wealth?...Who is doing things right....the socialists or us?
That only tells part of the story. The wealth is skewed towards a small percentage of the population in the US compared to other countries, and our middle class continues to shrink.
I don’t think that’s what he meant, I understood it as; if you have a higher education, you’re more likely to get a job with paid vacation time than someone who didn’t finish school and ended up doing menial work.
I have to say that the no federally mandated vacation pay in the U.S. was a complete surprise to me, a U.K. citizen, over here it’s as naturally expected as night follows day, I’ve never known it any different.
Just as double time is a given if you work a Sunday, or double time and a day off in lieu if you work a Bank Holiday, i.e. 4th of July or Thanksgiving in the U.S.
In U.K. the day after Christmas is known as Boxing Day, apparently years ago it was the day that the rich gave their servants and maids a Christmas gift, maybe in a box, this too is a Bank Holiday and no one is expected to go to work, but if they do they’ll be paid double time at least.
I'm surprised some of the posters on this thread haven't yet called you "socialist.".
Really? - based on what - certainly not based on actual economics.
According to the 2020 Fraisier Institute annual report - the US is the 5th most free economy and Canada is 9th out of 162 economies in the world. A country can not have economic freedom if cronyism is widely present.
Quote:
The index published in Economic Freedom of the World measures the degree to which the policies and institutions of countries are supportive of economic freedom. The cornerstones of economic freedom are personal choice, voluntary ex-change, freedom to enter markets and compete, and security of the person and privately owned property.
According to the Economists Crony Capitalist index, the US is nearly the lowest, with 1.8% of all wealth in the US can be "attributed to government connections among the business elite". Sounds like 98.2% of the economy is free market/capitalistic.
US is clearly NOT crony capitalism system - you need to read better textbooks.
The more valuable you are to a company the more like you are to get perks like better pay and paid vacations. If your job is to mop the floors you are pretty expendable. Why give you any benefits?
Because everything that is done in this life is so we can collectively enjoy a better world.
Why do you think we work?
We don't work so that the strong can benefit off the weak or to fill your pockets...
Not to mention that 'mopping floors' and 'flipping burgers' are extremely tangible and productive jobs that people directly benefit from every single day.
Every day, dozens of people go to McDonalds wanting hamburgers, and every day, dozens of people go home happy because they've had those hamburgers.
It should also be illegal to schedule someone to work until midnight one day and then come in a 5am the next day
Why should it be "illegal" - many may want that type of schedule. If you don't like it, get another job or ask the boss to not schedule you like that - they may be unaware.

But it seems that you do with regulations for nits like above and to keep from "treating them like crap". It is you that is putting up with the "crap" and have the power to change it, why do you want the government to be involved? How would you put "can not treat like crap" in a regulation anyway.
You do know that you can get another job - you are not required to work there.
So....you're saying that if you are not educated, you don't deserve paid vacation time? Because this country can't run without those jobs not requiring a college education. And not everyone can get an education either because of money or ability...but if you magically gave everyone a bachelor's degree and of course made them return to their burger-flipping job THEN they would and should get paid time off.
Yeah...been talk of robots for a long time now - maybe in 50 years - that won't solve any problems now.
You don't get it - you do not need to be "educated" to get paid vacation - according to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov) - essentially all government and 91% of full time private industry workers get paid vacation - sounds like much higher percent get vacation than just those with degrees.
The burger flipper / service jobs are the lowest for getting paid vacation and most in danger of being replaced by robots - if the job can be learned in an hour by any teen off the street, it is hard to justify paying to not work.

Let's say I own a burger joint.
You tell me how much you're going to charge me to design, build and perform maintenance on a robot that's going to properly cook, assemble and package hamburgers all day for me.
Like right now. Do you work in an engineering/construction/design/build type field?
Like by next week. Give me a ballpark.
