It depends on where you live for sure. I'm a CT tech and there are alot of jobs here paying in the 30s to 40s depending on experience. 30 to 40 dollars an hour that is.)

I studied to become a car body mechanic. That included welding. I liked welding so much, I started researching welding programs and certifications. Welding itself is mesmerizing. Spending each day in toxic fumes, on the other hand.... Under the mask, you would have to wear the filter mask all the time. It is uncomfortable, but possible.

In the end, I am not in trades at all. But welding and its sister blacksmithing is like a retirement dream.

I have a hard time believing this. $500,000 a year driving a truck? At 11 hours a day, 365 days a year that is about $125 an hour.

Once you start breaking down how much work is involved in someone's higher salary, like what you just did. It makes it a lot less lucrative.

Maybe you missed the "starting her own trucking business" part.

I also doubt that someone starting their own trucking business is making that much. Starting your own trucking business could be one person running one truck running independent. Even if it is having 3-5 trucks I doubt that she is making that much (unless her bills are at least $450,000 a year)
