No one said that.

YOU said your confidence is lacking. Is that what your BOSS says s/he sees. One person on DC saying,
"Once people make up their mind about you having low confidence, it becomes really hard to get them to see you differently"...doesn't make that so in YOUR case.

Before you go jumping all around to all kinds of conclusions talk to your boss. Tell him you want to move up. Ask him why you didn't get the gig. THEN you'll have something to go on.

The fact you stated the manager said you lack confidence...
I do not believe the manager ever said the OP didn't have confidence, or said or noticed anything about his/her confidence. THE OP said s/he is lacking confidence. That's two totally different things.

1. I asked OP if he (she?) talked to his manager about why he didn't get the job. His answer was "my confidence is lacking." I assumed that's what his manager said rather than what OP told himself.

2. Hate to break it to you but yea.. Once managers (or people, in general) have attached a negative label to you, it's tough to get them to change their mind. Especially if OP constantly does/says things to reaffirm their beliefs over those 2 years he's been there.

I stand by my original advice. If OP qualifies on paper for that higher position, he should just seek it at another company.

I don't get why OP was encouraged to apply though. That's odd to me. I am guessing OP's direct manager wants to promote him but the people above that person disagreed.

Wow you worked two whole years there and not Vice President yet? Were I work, promotional positions really don't come up that often and some people have been working for 10 years without getting promoted. I see a lot of these generation X types that think just because they work hard, they deserve a promotion, kind like those participation trophy's they hand out when playing sports. EVERYONE'S A WINNER, have a trophy. The real world doesn't work like that. If you like where you working, just suck it up and you may get promoted eventually. Thinking you "deserve" it, will just make you a bitter employee that will eventually quit and start the whole process over at another company. Yes jumping to another company around might get you that promotion you so desperately desire, but not always.

Then again my company positions may not be like your company, our levels are E02, E03(lead), E04 (manager), E05 (Senior Manager), E06 (Director), etc there a good 10k salary bump between levels and and Extra 5% year bonus incentive. They start out at 10%, so a manager's level, that's an extra 20% yearly bonus.

Your lack of confidence might have shown during your time there and maybe that's why you weren't selected. You have to show that you're perfectly capable to move up, otherwise they'll pick the next person they feel will do a strong job.

It's more about the boss, the boss' personal network and the boss' ego

The OP probably blew his/her chances of being promoted at the interview. The OP's manager told him/her the OP showed a lack of confidence. It was probably at the promotion interview by people that did not know him/her where the lack of confidence came into play.

One thing is you never promote someone into management, that is not positive and confident they can do the job better than others. If they are not sure and confident at the promotion interview, that you are ready to lead and manage others you w ill not get the job. If you are not positive and confident at the interview, it is feared you would be the same with employees under you, and they would sense it and not trust your ability to lead and manage them.
