If you will be traveling a lot then you should live closer to a major airport with the good number of direct flights to most of the places you'll be working in. I'd say settle around the hub airport. If you have to travel weekly connections can make your life a living hell especially with delays and cancellations. I'd say Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, NYC, LA (don't guarantee direct flights everywhere though), Washington DC (same here), SF (same here) are very popular with the frequent travelers. SF is not a good airport for a frequent traveler IMO, when it rains or it has low clouds one of the lanes closes and it causes huge traffic delays, it's also not a hub, so if you happen to work in some smaller town that's not in CA or west coast you are not likely to find a direct flight. Otherwise it's well connected to all the major cities. The busy hubs like Atlanta and Chicago O'Hare also can be hell especially due to bad weather which both seem to get during certain seasons.
Other things to consider is presence of alternative airports, so Chicago would be good since in addition to the busy O'Hare they also have Midway airport. Washington DC has 3 airports to choose from, Bay Area 2-3 as well and LA has a bunch of local airports.
If you hate traveling, try to settle around the place where your company will higher chances positioning you on the local gigs. I don't know about your area of consulting but I'd ask someone who has been working for the company for a while.
If you start considering airport weather, how busy they are (not pleasant) and how good or bad they are for frequent flyer mileage plan members (and which airlines are better for that) then things start getting complicated. LOL
The best thing, again, is to try to talk to your fellow co-workers.
I think KC has as fair bit of environmental consulting firms. But this is a bit out of my depth.
