I have to know more about the job to offer any advise.
In 6mo you'll get a raise. In 18 month after that, another raise, then a raise every 2 yrs.
There's locality pay but that's normally included in the job announcement if applicabile.
Do your best. Have your standard interview questions ready.
Again, if I knew what agency & location also what type of job? Permanent/full time?
Still do the interview. It's a long process, getting hired.

You NEVER have to worry about getting paid when you have a federal job. You will have to worry about getting paid on time every few years but all things considered, a federal job is a sweet deal compared to other sectors. Much more stable, regular pay raises, and unmatched retirement benefits compared to the private sector. Try to ask a federal worker if they'd trade places with someone in a similar position in the private sector and I doubt you'd get many who would leave their federal job. As for the OP's question no doubt take the federal job.
Your interviewer might be concerned about your commute if it's 1.5 hours one way in the afternoon
1) In some areas 1.5 hr commute is not that unusual. Would it take getting used to if you've only commuted 10 each way? Sure. And I wouldn't want to do it. But people do what they have to do, and go where the job is.
2) If it's anything like the Fed interviews I've had, they won't even refer to your resume, ask you directly about your skills, or notice your address to even ask you about your commute. Interviewers are too busy reading scripts about how the interview will proceed, asking every candidate the same questions in the same order, and taking notes based on a particular answer format, and writing your answers to questions like:
-- tell me about the last time you had a disagreement with a co worker, or
-- tell me about a time when a policy was changed at work and how you handled that

Do you know for sure that's how the WG pay scale works?
I can tell you for a fact -- not all Fed pay scales have automatic step increase pay raises.
Ask TSA agents or people on the SV scale if they get regular raises.
That's not to say don't take the Fed job. For sure, it does seem to be the better choice.
I'm in quite the dilemma. Or not, maybe I'm over thinking this.
I'm currently in retail and make a decent wage as a first level manager. I make around $35k a year live comfortably. I work Monday through Friday and my commute is 8 minutes in the morning and about 15 in the afternoon.
I currently have a interview with the Federal Govt WG level ( blue collar hourly ). I will be making %30 more than I do now but will have to commute work I'm guess 30-45 minutes in the moring to 45-1.15hr in the afternoon depending on which shift I'm on.
If I were to get this job, do you think it would be worth the drive to take a Fed job and get out of retail?
I'm not used to commuting, as my whole life I've chosen jobs that have been close to home.
Definatly fed job. I commute like 30 to 45 min in morning, 45 to over an hour going home...and I live 9 miles from work. Lol..
I would take the Fed job, no brainer. Not only higher pay, but more stable and I assume way better benefits, and chances to advance.
