This is kind of a question that is directed toward those who absolutely love their current employment. Those that are getting paid handsomely, great benefits, etc....

What do you think truly set you apart from the other candidates? You're resume? Your Cover Letter? Did you even use a Cover Letter when applying? Your interview? What do you think is the winning formula in getting the job you want?

For me it has always been my interview.

I was me at the interview. No pretense. Just me. Many weren't interested but the right place took the bite. Just my speed. Pay is lousy but workable.

I love my job, get paid well ("handsomely" might be stretching it - at least by our insane local standards), and have excellent benefits; so I guess I qualify to answer this?

My job also happens to be a public/county position, which means you have to follow the same procedures as anyone else who's interested: Wait for a recruitment announcement, submit the application, get on the eligibility list, interview (sometimes multiple times), and hopefully get a job! Took me just a few months after the application to get hired, and according to my supervisor I was chosen based on a strong interview + the fact that I was a "great fit" for the specific job. I do tend to interview well, according to those who have interviewed me over the years, probably because I'm MYSELF. I am my best and most professional self, of course, but I don't come across as phony or stiff/nervous. So yeah, I guess that's the "secret" in my case.

By first seeing it on your craigslist and then someone at the State Career Center seeing and giving it to HR. When I contacted HR she first said my salary was too high and then when she received it from the career center rep she scheduled me to come in for a interview.

Luck.

I have always been regarded as a strong candidate. But ultimately it comes down to luck and timing. Without that, you're not getting the job no matter how qualified you are.

I was recruited by the company, so I would say specific domain experience plus a technical background. My recent degree was just a plus. Yes, I still had to go through the rounds of interviews so I made enough of an impression to where I received the offer. It’s a role where all of my career twists and turns actually make sense. So far, I love the job, very interesting work and in line with what I have always wanted to do outside of running my own business.

My resume got me the interview, my interview got me the job. It was my ability to demonstrate my experience and skills from two different industries in the past, both required for a somewhat unique position. Competitors, and the previous incumbents who failed had one of the skill sets.
