There are agencies out there that skirt the rules and don't get called to task for it. I've not been a hiring manager so I don't know all the rules regarding veterans, but I think it's a pretty hard sell to pass on a qualified veteran. I know of one manager who was "able to chuck the veteran" who made a cert and, well, that person wasn't in that position for very long.

I’m assuming most selections are based on nepotism and high end connections. Just like the private sector
You are leaving out an important piece of information.

You have ten years of experience as a non-managerial warehouse worker. That isn’t going to help you much for a few reasons.

First, you won’t qualify for many jobs, as warehousing isn’t exactly the core of what the fed does. Secondly, when it comes to jobs of this simple nature, ten years of experience isn’t much better than 2 years of experience. Third, given the low barriers to entry for jobs of this type, I can imagine a thousand or two thousand people applying for each one. Your chances of getting something are small because of the immense competition.

Except that the lies will be exposed during a well-crafted interview.
Oh, please. Just how do you figure that when 99% of the interview is personality based questions, not skills based.
-- Tell me about a time when you....
-- What are you proudest of....
-- Has there ever been a time when....and how did you handle it
-- What are you most excited about, or what excites you, in life....

They read off a paper, and ask the same questions of all candidates. (so the process can be "fair and transparent" (Riiiiight))

Candidates could be making crap up out of whole cloth.
They're not calling an old boss to see if the story you told is true.
"Mr Jones, we're interviewing Joe Blow and he said he did XYZ when a customer did XYZ, is that true?"

So how exactly would your answer be "exposed" regarding anything.
Give me a break.

Not in the government. At least that's not how it's supposed to be.

^^I had posted a sarcastic answer.
But then asked myself why even go there.

People who have interview recently know exactly how it is.

Good job.

And yes, there have always been agencies that break the law. I worked for one that's notorious for such things. And unfortunately in this lawless climate, they can get away with more. But things change, and debts will be called in at some point. So they should enjoy the free-for-all while they can.

Hmm. Granted I was usually interviewing candidates for fairly technical positions but I can't recall ever asking such non-illuminating happy-dance questions until after the questions involving specific pieces of practical knowledge were finished.

sounds like the series 2010 jobs for inventory specialist would be good for a warehouse job... his lack of success is likely he doesnt take advice from people since he thinks he is right, and his hate for management doesnt help any either

the most different thing from private sector to me is federal jobs are divided into series like the military uses MOS designations. learning how to find the right series to work in is key. they two same jobs but different series would not qualify for the other without teeth pullig

Is it true that if one works 5 yrs in a fed job, he/she will get some medical health retirement insurance where they pay premiums equivalent to someone that is currently working full time? How do they determine your benefits? From salary earned over the years?

I am near seven figures in my retirement funds(401k, Roth, stocks, assets, etc.) and really tired of my stressful job. I can't quit though due to need of health insurance since i'm still a long ways away from 65 yrs old to be eligible for medicare. I was hoping to find a much less stressful position with some kind of medical pension per say. I have no problem with a low salaried position, so pay is not an issue.

Anyone here work in a fed position? Please explain. Thanks.
