Has anyone started their own pet sitting service? What is your opinion about it? How do you charge? Would you start your own home-based pet sitting service where the pets come to your house? (Boarding, doggy-daycare, bathing, more) Just trying to start a business and I'm a Certified Vet Tech with 11 years experience.

I know of people who charge from $12.00-$25.00 a visit for catsitting. These two people only go to others' houses. Whatever the market will bear.

Yes, I have a cat sitter as well. I don't usually let the sitter take care of the dog as it would be 2x as expensive. Mine also charges around $10 per visit. I usually give her more as she does some other things for me while I'm away. Water plants, feed birds/fish, take garbage out, pick up my newspaper, things like that. I really cherish her enthusiasm with pets. Means a lot to me. She does come to my house. I wouldn't want to bring my animals to hers as it defeats the purpose of my pets - less stress and not catching other fleas or diseases from other animals that you sometimes find when you board your pets. I don't know how much you would really make either. My sitter quit doing it as a business, and just keeps her favorite clients for extra cash. Good luck to you.

Have you tried speaking with owners of this type of business?
I would call at least 5 people that own pet sitting businesses and ask them the questions you have, I have done this in the past for many times of work and find that 90% of the time people are very willing to answer your questions. Although I would suggest calling businesses outside your service area.

Good luck!

I have heard that in order to get GREAT business you need to be licensed AND insured.

If you have employees, you will want to do background checks and be bonded/insured.

I have a friend who does this and I've done it here and there part time on the side. She does it full time, is licensed and bonded. She charges $15/visit and mainly comes to visit/walk dogs during the day while the owners are at work. She also does vacation visits ($15/visit) cats, dogs, birds, etc. She will board dogs at her house: $30/day. She makes great money!

Check out some internet websites for other pet sitters. I've looked at some and was amazed at what some charged.

I always used a my friend's cousin who loves animals. I think I gave her $10 per visit and would have her come every other day. Cats are pretty easy to care for if they don't need any special care (and if they only eat dry food). Now my cats are practically special needs cats. It would cost me a FORTUNE if I left town.

Default Payment for pet sitter

Does anyone know what to pay a pet sitter who actually stays at your house? I have two dogs and have no idea what the going rate is. Thanks!
