Yes, it's impossible to tell the importance or level of position held by an "associate" without the rest of the title, or at least part of the job description. Most terms like Associate, Team Member, Partner, Operative, and Cast Member are simply used as
euphemisms for clerk, cashier, stocker, cart jockey, ticket taker, or other low pay low skill job. Associate is also used as a title or part of a title for professional positions.
