It's not meant to be stimulating. It's meant to keep good records for the person who comes after you, to make you better prepared for the next task, and in general clear the decks for action so the speak. It's something good professionals do and a skill that has been lost in the last few years with the heavy emphasis on short term thinking.

That's a lot better than watching movies on your phone like I see some idiots at my job do when they run out of things to do.

When it's slow, Manager and her employee huddle inside Manager's room and whisper and gossip for 2 hours. If not, they have small talk really loudly. It's so annoying. They talk more than they work. And then employee claims she doesn't have time when I ask her to help me with something. Yeah right.

yup. since I work from home, I just work off my macbook and remote into my windows machine. use that one for work, and I can do whatever the hell I want on my macbook desktops since I'm on my own internet. that means I can browse ANYTHING.

To answer your question: Yes.

It's not that I sometimes have nothing to do that bothers me. It's that I sometimes have nothing to do but still have to stay there all day, pretending to be productive.

It's not all that bad as I rarely go more than a couple days without something being put on my plate. I dread those empty days, though.

One thing that surprised me about large corporate companies was the importance of process and silos. Large companies have their own well-defined process for doing everything, every project and every task. If you try to deviate you will get nowhere.

If you try to step out of your specific role, and do work your not "supposed" to do, or help someone that your manager did not tell you to help, then you can get into real trouble. In some cases this is due to politics. In other cases, this is due to regulatory reasons and the need for companies to maintain invisible "walls".

At smaller companies, you are expected to wear many hats, and pitch in wherever your help is needed. Small and mid-size companies will often share staff between teams as the need arises. I have never seen that at a large corporation.
