Ever noticed that you haven't seen the guy who sits a couple cubicles away from you for over a week, then you ask around and hear that he got "the axe"? It seems like it's usually the more reserved/quiet employees who get the axe. Maybe that's because the company thinks that people won't notice if the less visible employees disappear completely.

This has happened among contractors in my current job. This is the worst place I've ever worked. There's no reason for high turnover. I feel terrible for the people I see coming in for interviews because there's no way for them to know what a complete sh*tshow it is behind the scenes.

Corporate America is nothing but a social club or frat house where likeability, gibber gabber, social BSing is the only thing that matters. Things that SHOULD matter like Value, Hard work, Loyalty, ability, going above and beyond mean nothing and has no barring on keeping your job or getting promoted. Hiring managers would rather keep useless dead weight around who hob nob all day and accomplish nothing as opposed to valuable employees who don't kiss their rear end and socialize all day

Its why turnover rates are at a record high in companies today, employee disengagement is at a record high, and why companies are self destructing long term and now why companies have to lay in the bed they made. When you only hire and prompt based on BS, you end with the blind leading the blind and inevitable destruction. The idiots today running the show don't seem to understand this little fact

No, in decades of work I have never noticed that.

I do not know how predictable stealth separations are. When a specific member of a work group has responsibilities reduced, has hours reduced, has been called not to come in for several days, has been removed from the schedule and his/her work station has been cleared of his/her belongings, he/she has separated.

It happens sometimes. Back in 2009 a guy I worked with just left for lunch and never came back ever. No one knew what happened to him. I just know a guy I talked to regularly who took care of email accounts found out when he had a request to deactivate the guy's email.

I think some people are just a little less vocal about leaving. They just leave quietly for whatever reason. The only time I saw a stealth "firing" was in 2011 when one of my co-workers with let go. No one noticed he had left, but our manager called an all hands at the end of the day to let us know that he had departed the company.

I work at a place which has "Flex Time" which has been used to "Let go" of people.

They claim "We just don't have the work" so you're off for 4-12 weeks (Or more) and they're trying to have you apply for other jobs and hoping you quit....

State UI requires you to apply for jobs if you know the "Flex time" will be longer than 4 weeks.

Where I worked stealth firing was the norm, we didn't beat drums, and make signs. Got the person in, out as quietly as possible with the least amount of work disruption. Anybody who asked, got the standard, "He/She is no longer with the company." Anybody who needed to know the real cause already knew and plans had been put in place.

Only when the reason for the firing was sensitive (either for the company or the employee or both) and they didn't want to draw attention to it.

(loudspeaker intercom)
Attention Employees, Attention Please.

The ABC Corporation is please to announce that MikeRoweOptimeiser has been Fired today.

Please join us in a rousing course of "Corner of the Sky" as we say farewell. You can gather by elevator "G" to wave goodbye as security escorts this now former employee out the door. I'm sure we all wish him/her well in their new career wherever that may be.

Once again, we had to terminate MikeRoweOptimeiser because of poor productivity and as always, any remaining personal items MikeRoweOptimeiser failed to remove from their work area when fired will be auctioned off in the break room at 3:00 pm.

Thank you and have a great ABC Corp day!

Is that how you preferred it handled?
