Several years ago, a college on the east coast had the NAACP sponsor a full years scholarship. On the form a student filled out, it showed that he was in fact, an African American.
When he went to receive the award, the award presenters were shocked to see he was white. They wanted to not present him with the award, except he was 100% African-American. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and after he moved to the US, he did what needed to be done to become a US citizen....
The NAACP reluctantly awarded him the award, but not before several threats of a law suite...
I have heard this story several times but never with any actual names or locations. Source?

That is just funny, that right there is an example of things blowing up in NAACP face. Reap what you sow.
Police use it to identify suspects. The US Govt uses it to identify people for assistance. Employers use it to show they are following the laws of employing without discrimination....
Not an issue.
"Not an issue". I disagree. Obviously RACE would be an issue when the Police are investigating a crime but WHY should RACE be necessary for any document? Is it any business of a potential employer what RACE you belong to? Or loan officer? ETC.

It's going to be an issue until the Boomer generation is dead.
I voted "yes", because after reading the whole OP and putting myself in the shoes of the person seeking help, I would have been annoyed to have been grilled by the IT guy about who fixed my problem then put on the spot about the skin color of the individual who helped me. OP didn't only put OP on the spot, but also put the "customer" in a weird spot for bringing race into a workplace discussion.

Even if the race question had not been asked, as a customer I'd begin wondering if I was about to get someone who had helped me into trouble.
