Disagree....yes people are being paid as opposed to forced labor but in all reality this is modern day slavery/ oppression by paying workers such low wages they cannot truly support themselves while the executives rake in millions. It's just legalized slavery in my opinion...tell me the worker making $8- 15 doesn't feel like a slave.

I once quit a job after 2 days. Job paid $400 a week and I needed he job. Here's the kicker they kept holding me there doing stuff way past 8 hours. I calculated how much $ I made those 2 days and it was actually less than $7 an hour. This was a mechanics job btw in an unairconditoned shop in 80% humid 100 degree alabama heat. I had to bring all my own tools. I looked through the service window at my buddy in sales who made the same $ sitting in an office chair in the AC and talking on the phone. Not fair. The 2nd day I realized I would be having to buy additional tools which were job specific out of my own $. The 3rd day I walked into the boss's office and resigned. I told them don't even bother paying me for those 2 days, it wasn't worth the hassle of waiting on a w2 come tax time.

What's funny is another mechanic on the first day looked at me and said "I bet you won't last a month". I asked why. "Because the last 2 guys they hired didn't last a month either". Hard to believe people run a business this way. Don't get me wrong I knew the pay was low going in, but the days were absolutely brutal.

"Feel like" a slave, I can agree with. But it isn't slavery. As long as there is real slavery in the world, the word shouldn't be used as casual hyperbole.

I agree. Slavery is a strong word. Pseudo-slavery more like it

That kind of money should be expected for someone who is unskilled. It's a lot worse when you have a college degree and the debt that comes with it making that.

Turnover rate is pretty high at my place of employment also. I blame the low pay. People seem to work in a position for 6mo-1yr, then move to another position, or leave the university all together.

My coworker has been here 3 years and she's been here longer than 75% of the staff on my floor. Crazy!

I find that in any workplace with a steady revolving door you have a worker or two who stick around forever. I'm one of those workers. A revolving door means job security and more OT for me The key to making money today is being able to do the things that others can't or won't do.

So long as you aren't suicidal. I worked at an insurance call center, employee 15248, and wanted to shoot myself most days. I thought I was alone till I met a dude there for 12 years. Said he hoped he would get in a car accident every morning. That's when I decided I had to leave for sure. It was amazing how so many other people could just come to work and do the job then whistle dixie as they walk out for the day while other people couldn't make it out of the training class.

Right because humans are not robots. Some people can tolerate certain forms of work better than others.
