A friend who is expecting (maternity leave) asked me my opinions on what she should do concerning taking time off work. She's been approved for 3 months off, which is pretty generous compared to most places.
Now she's wondering if she should ask for a flexible schedule this early, to better prep for upcoming costs (daycare, etc), or she should just keep working and not say anything, bringing it up when she returns back to work.
I feel like she should ask and at least know how to prep for the upcoming months before the baby comes or she could wait until she returns, but that's a toss up.
Her husband apparently got approved for 2 work from home days and if she could get some flexibility in that regard, it would help with child care costs. Hence me being all for her asking earlier rather than later.
What do you guys think, what would you do?
Worse case, they say no, but you never know until you ask; helps one plan one way or another.

This is for maternity leave...the question is if she's seeking a flexible schedule upon return, should she mention it now or wait until closer to her return date to bring it up. With her husband getting a few work from home days, if she could also get a few, she would be in better position to plan for daycare and budget accordingly.
This has nothing to do with fmla as far as I know. She is getting 3 months maternity leave.
After leave she would like a flex schedule to reduce daycare costs if possible. She is wondering whether to broach the subject of the flex schedule (work from home) now with the employer? The worse they could say is no and she plans accordingly for when she gets to that bridge.

In many places, it's the same thing.
Anyway, I would do it now. It's always better to plan ahead.
Do other people at her company flex their schedules? How does she want to flex the schedule? Does she have daycare set up now? I have several friends that were able to do this when they had their first. They had been with the company for awhile and requested to work from home one day a week.
Does everybody there have a flex schedule? If not, chances are she won't get it, because it wouldn't be fair to the other employees. Lots of working moms make it work without a flex schedule, why should she be any different?
