What if the IT jobs ads people complain about for having so many different requirements *really* reflect the state of that company's IT systems?! Ouch!

Can you imagine that mess you'd have to deal with?!!!

I've got some bad news for you: Sometimes they do. Companies start with one system, and then either they acquire other companies which have other systems, or they replace them but never quite finish the replacement so there's a bit of the old system still kept running. Repeat until you have a rats nest.

This. My company's systems look like a bomb went off, but nobody's sweeping up the debris. They're just building on top of it.

Apparently there is a lot of COBOL code out there, too expensive to rewrite in something more modern. It's the business logic that banks and other institutions use.

Pretty much everything nowadays good or bad means more work for coders: Smartwatchs? More apps to code! Big company got hacked? Security consulting! etc, etc.
