I'm a history major with a 3.8 GPA from a decent state school, but I did not manage to intern in college. Instead, I worked part-time at the college library. I've been rejected from a ton of jobs so far, and it seems they all agree that I don't have enough experience. Is it because I didn't intern? Are liberal arts graduates with no internships doomed to be unemployed until they obtain said internships?
My daughter majored in English.
First job was as the marketing assistant at a small bank (400 people).
No internships.
She worked Summers in a lingerie store.
She now works for a very cool ad agency.
took me all but 1 minute to look up a random job and qualifications:
"High school diploma/GED and three years related required. Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, art, art history, museum studies or a related field strongly preferred. Additional education can be substituted for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. "
What did you plan to do with a history degree? You didn't major in Communication, or English, or College Student Personnel, Human Resources, Business or Office Management, etc., etc., which is what someone applying for most of those jobs would have majored in, so most employers won't see a direct correlation from your degree to the jobs you are applying for. I'm not knocking your degree (I love history), you just didn't give any thought to your post college career.
Actually, minimum requirements are not reflective of actual hiring trends. You really can't get a job in a museum these days unless you've got a Master's degree and at least one internship, because competition is fierce.

Why did you major in history? What was your end game?
I didn't really have much of a game plan, but I was always told that liberal arts majors could go into any field after graduation.
