Its funny, a lot of people who have not progressed as far as they think they should have in their careers always have an excuse as to why. And it never has anything to do with themselves.

Those who are most likely to always make excuses are those who will be the least likely to ultimately succeed.

Exactly. I still make mistakes, even 20 years into my career. But when I do, I try to learn from them.

Many people who go on to be successful started in low-wage, menial jobs. Its called starting at the bottom. A number of core skills can be learned, even in those positions, that can benefit one as they move up the career ladder.

What kind of malarkey is this? Just about all successful people have failed!

Timing, timing, timing. And to a lesser degree, career path choices.

If you want a lofty salary and prestigious title, you can sign up for the rat race and pit your charisma, and persuasion skills against others.

But if you want to get there via the merits of your hard work, then timing is EVERYTHING.

The most important period to work hard is undergraduate and your 20s. Ironically, that is the period where nobody wants to work hard.

The guy who gets a 4.0 in undergrad, a great MCAT score and becomes a dermatologist understood the importance of timing.

The guy who goofed around and got a degree in whatever or nothing, and then at age 29 decided he wants to work hard has a very long road ahead of him.
