Hiding what he left behind is not dealing with the issue (unless you talk to him about it at the end of the day or the next moring). You deal with consistently poor through progressive discipline.
I don't think you understand. He is always leaving things around. I got fed up with his carelessness.
The message was that he needs to be more cautious with such important items. Anything could happen to them and he needs to be aware of them at all time. Why did he wait a month before asking me where they were?
When I talk to him about it I can tell that he still doesn't care for these things like he should.
It was silly on your part, and did you ever think he may have a medical condition that makes him forgetfull? I am not saying he does, but it is a possiblity.
A friend of mine hid my cell at the beach because I had left it on my blanket, and she was trying to teach me a lesson about not just leaving my belongings out on the towel as someone could easily grab it; However, the moment I asked if anyone saw it she handed it to me (she didn't lose it).
If your employee is clumsy, careless, etc. then perhaps give him a warning and if he continues the behavior let him go. It sounded like the samples were not pressing at the moment, which is why he did not ask if you had seen them until a few months later. He at least deserves a warning about his behavior, now that he has been there 1 year. If he slips up again, he will have to find new employment. Just my $0.02.
He should have returned the samples and given the person a warning. If he is losing other things like his wallet or personal cell phone, that's on him and shouldn't even be factored into your decision making, even if you know about it.
