I see the term 9-5 job used around a lot. But the thing is I don't know anyone who works a 9-5 anymore. It's usually 8-5 or 9-6. And we all know many people work many more hours that just 40 hours. Just something that bothers me a bit.

I work 7-3:30, my staff has staggered start times from 7:30-10:00am, and some have flex (longer hours, extra day off every other week) or some telecommuting days. There is more of that lately to help help accommodate personal needs of the employees, and reduce the commute traffic.
9-4 if I don't leave for lunch some days. If I work remotely, it is more like 8-5:30. I work that extra time I would otherwise spend commuting. So, yeah, not a straight 9-5 and adds up to a little more than 40 hours/week.
I started working full time in 1990 and I've never worked 9-5 or known anyone who ever had those hours. Everyone I've always known ever has considered full time to be forty hours or more a week.
I work 9-5 (not including time working at home, etc) normally. Usually take a 10 or 15 minute lunch so just grab some food, as I get bored.
However, being salaried, I do have the flexibility of coming in earlier or later, by an hour or two. I prefer 9-5 though.
