How valuable is signing up for one of these groups for your professional well being? I see Facebook groups (but understand FB is going the way of MySpace) and wonder if its just the latest fad. Have seen others recommend Linked In for networking and job prospecting. Anyone have comments about successes or failures using these (type) sites?
I find Linked-In very valuable at communicating with others in my profession in general and industry. I find the discussion groups very useful. It helps market the company I work for, It helps market myself not that I have any interest in job searching anytime this century.
Facebook I have all but abandoned. It has gotten too complicated and gimmicky as well as a security problem if you ever post anything politically incorrect it can follow you for the rest of your life.

That's debatable. I, for one, think that Facbeook is here to stay.
I think the difference is that when people under 30 stopped using MySpace, it died. Now that young people are no longer using Facebook, it's propped up by old people. MySpace was unable to capture an older market. And Facebook has been able to replace their younger user base with an old user base. The question is, will they be able to maintain that user base? Hard to tell.
I would not advise using Facebook. That is more of a personal social network.
Linkedin is decent. It allows you to be professional from an employment standpoint and network with companies and people you worked with. It works for specific groups of employers and job seekers.
