This question is directed at people who work in career type jobs that require some type of training post High School.
Back when I was working I used to expect a nice $500 to $1000 bonus every December from my employer. Usually my bonus was based on how well I performed and how well the company was doing. They had a system and it was a great motivator and a way to pay off Christmas gift bills.
Now I mention those bonuses to friends still in the workplace and they tell me they don't exist anymore due to the economy. Is this true? Is the annual end of the year bonus gone?
What is your experience? If you got a bonus, how was it determined?
I did not receive one, but I am a government employee. My wife received a small bonus from the school she work for, along with some pretty generous gifts from her student's parents.
I work public sector and a couple of private sector jobs. Bonuses are obviously out of line in the public sector, but the private sector jobs also never offer bonuses now, holiday or otherwise.
An annual bonus based on performance - yes. A 'holiday bonus', not current job, but previous jobs - yes.
I think it also depends on the company - I often hear about smaller firms (mostly contractors or builders) that will take the entire staff on a vacation (Caribbean, etc.). I guess when you get to a certain size, you just rent out entire theme parks for staff and family. I'll leave it up to each person to determine if spending those activities with work are actually a "bonus".
