Ok so I've been developing for about a 2 years, but never had the the time to sit down and really learn it until about 3 months ago. So far I'm having a blast and decided I wanted to make this a career, but I'm hearing that I might not be able to do so without a degree. Some say it's possible, but hard.

I want to go to college, but I wanted to see is it possible to get hired before. The languages I work with are Python, Java, and Ruby. But I enjoy front end web development more. I know HTML/CSS, Javascript, Ajax, jQuery, and Rails. And frameworks like Bootstrap, Foundation, and Modernizr.

I've been getting more involved with Github after finding some projects I liked. I've also started working on my own projects, putting together a portfolio site, and maybe try out some freelancing.

Are there any tips you can give me to be able to land my first job? Thanks.

In the web field... the simplest way is to release a solid open source project and wait for job offers.

The best is to start looking for entry level positions or internship type positions. There are a lot of positions at $15/hour + that will give you the experience you need and quickly move you to making salaries into $50k+. In IT you cannot really fool programming it takes commitment and good skills. However if you deal with business people who don't know programming they are dependent on good programmers and developers. It helps to develop business level understanding of processes so you can develop better solutions.

Good luck.

What programs have you actually developed? Anything?
I'm working on 2 Rails apps right now; a song finder app, and app that helps you find apartments and cities based on your personal tastes. I'm thinking about starting on a jQuery app that takes Instagram pics and ranks them based on their popularity.
