My brother-in-law works at a gay campground resort in the Northeast that allows nudity. The place has been there for several years and everyone in the small rural county where it is located knows its there too.

Last night he and his partner came over to our house. I was asking my brother-in-law that I guess he has received many of nutty calls over the years due to the nature of his business. Intertesting he said not from who you would expect. Churches? Religious Groups? People in Government circles?
No..he was saying he has received a number of calls from many different businesses DEMANDING to know if so and so is there. Of course the campground will not release that kind of information.

Among the businesses who have called his place was a well known restaurant chain, a computer software company, an amusement park and a TV station in in the Dakotas ( some 2000 miles away !! ). The TV station actually got kinda nasty saying if they don't tell them that "John Doe" was there they may have to contact their lawyers. The station was saying that by having one of the employees visiting such a place it goes against their company's conservative values.

To avoid trouble, he was telling me that beginning in 2008 they may have to do employment background checks on those who want enter the resort. In other words if you work for a business that isn't gay friendly, you may not be allowed to enter.

I am not surprised to hear about this since I saw a news report on TV not too long ago about some employers are now going as far as telling their employees what they can and cannot do...on their own time for fear that one's personal life could harm the company, or so they say.. I even heard that one nationally known bank is going as far as creating fake profiles on adult websites to catch their employees in the act of being on such a site FROM HOME !!

Now I can see a company not allowing an employee to visit such a site at work, but at home on their own time? Whats next? A company telling their employees what movies they can/can't see? What cities they can/can't visit?

Whatever happened to free time being your own time?

Well think of this, all the people that must submit to urinalisys, for drugs and alcohol testing to keep their job. Have one too many beers and get popped for a Ua the next day and your not eligable for work. So in conclusion your own time is not your own. Thank the Feds for that one.

I feel if you show up to work, put in a good day's labor, then what you do on your personal time (legal of course) is your own business.

Any company that has nothing to do but engage in 'entrapment' of their employees is not a place for a person with any sort of self respect. They obviously have too much time on their hands or too many managers with 'wacky' business ideas.

Just to play devil's avocate....what if it was your child's teacher that was found to be visiting a site that promotes child porn??
Now according to your reasoning, it's ok because the teacher is doing it on their "own" time.

Child porn is a whole different matter. Its illegal !! Illegal no matter where one looks at it. Work or home. People who look at such stuff should be sent to jail no questions ask.

But last time I checked, having an profile on an adult site ( adults only ), visting a gay campground, nude beach, bath house, or even a weekend trip to a gay friendly city ( San Francisco, Denver, Indianapolis, Hollywood, Atlanta, etc ) is totally legal and your employer I believe really doesn't have the right to tell you that you can't go to such places.

I draw the line at 5PM. It is not any business of my employer what I do after 5PM so long as it is not affecting the company. And the same with my lunch hour. I am not paid for my lunch hour and if I wish to go to the local strip club, I will (BTW I don't).

I think it depends on the kind of job you do as far as whether or not your employer has a right to say what you can or can not do when you are off the clock.

Work in politics and the candidate you work for say is against gay marriage. Might be in your best ineterest to stay away from West Hollywood or Disney World when they are having their so called "gay day". However for them to tell you to stay away from Indianapolis or Denver because of those cities stance on gay rights that is kinda pushing it.
