You are in a tough situation, since if you admit that it's for a medical test, your employer will assume you have a medical problem, which (fair or not) will be damaging to your career. If you don't mention it's for a doctor's appointment, they will assume that it's for something recreational that (in their opinion) should be done over the weekend.

Can you schedule the test for a weekend, or before or after work hours?

Exactly. If you mention medical appt and having to have tests done even though it is just routine testing they're going to wonder does the OP have problems and will it impact work going forward.

As I said earlier if the OP needs lab work done, find one of these labs that opens really early, tell the doctor's office you're starting a new job, can my appt for the office be in late May instead of June.

Do your best to not have to take any time off at a new job.

Of course I'm going to try to aviod skipping any work if possible. I wouldn't say it is for medical tests. I'm just going to say follow up appointment. Or I can say that I need to get my permanent crown put on...crowns usually take two appointments.

I've thought of using another excuse rather than medical, but then it all looks stupid. If I say car stuff, they'll think my transportation isn't reliable. I could of course say that my water heater blew and they are coming between the hours of X and Y to install it and someone needs to be home.

No matter what, it I understand that it might put me in a bad light for the moment. But, this is really a one time thing and I know that and I will work hard to prove to them - like come in early/stay late.

I met the boss and the other people in the office and everyone looks pretty laid back. My boss himself seems to be reasonable.
