Yes, because it's polite. I can't believe someone even asked this.

Seconded! I always try to say Thank You when someone buys me lunch - the circumstances shouldn't matter.

I know....why was this asked?

It was a gift. If you didn't say thanks don't look too much into it cuz I doubt he or she really cares. Your boss just wanted your company and you showed up. At these type of occasions, that is all that matters. You are suppose to have fun and simply put, its your boss's way of blurring the line between manager and employee.

Now if you blew your boss off, different story.

If you are having a hard time with it mentally, just casually say "thanks" and then move on to another topic.

I always do. If I didn't have to pay for something, that means someone else did. I thank the boss even if THEY didn't personally pay for it. I can't thank a "company", it's not a person.

You say thank you. You were chosen by that person to go out for dinner. You don't have to pay. Thank you is what you say. If you don't, you are certainly in the wrong.

We usually joke and say thank you "insert company name". Most times the person buying the meal with turn around and say thank you since the only reason the meal is being expensed is because you are doing some kind of work.

yes, due to habit and common courtesy

Plus, filling out the expense report is a PIA, and anyone who is is doing it for the group deserves a thank you

We had the same rule. Because they have a higher $/per meal/per group allotment. I have to get permission to do so.
