It's a shame that we invite others into the country and allow outsourcing when there are not enough jobs for our own people.

If the OP can find a place where the climate tends to be friendly all year round and where food is abundant, it might not be a bad move, especially if you don't have training in a marketable profession in the US.

I don't know where that would be, though.

Not everyone is suitable for corporate life, but more and more, that is the main place for jobs today. My father was a truck mechanic for major corporations of his day. Those jobs and companies no longer exist. The farm his parents had has been bought up by agribusiness.

Cars have so many electronics that really skilled mechanics are no longer needed to work on them.

How many times/years can you take your resume being rejected?

Rather than ridicule this person, think of what can we do to turn the situation around. You don't know how long this person struggled before giving up. This could be your kid.

None of us have jobs that are really secure. How easily could you transfer to another company if your job were outsourced or there was a merger and you were let go as redundant?

If you have a good job, be thankful and try to have some compassion for those less fortunate.
Excellent post....and refreshing to hear a mature adult perspective.

I don't know where the answer is, either, but there is no question that the major trend here is down - as you say.

We have no one to blame but us, collectively, since we continue to allow huge corporations to pillage as they please in the name of "globalization". All the while their clueless cheerleaders defend them to the death....hanging upside down from their ankles as their pockets are emptied.

Unfortunately, the entire world, except for a few pockets like Cuba and North Korea and the most impoverished parts of Africa, is subject to the same forces.

It's the multinational conglomerates' planet now -- we just live on it.

I would, however, like to add my voice to the chorus demanding to know just where the OP plans to move, and how.

Your resignation is the epicenter of the problem. I don't - and won't - share it

If I go to live in the Philippines I don't have to work, as my SSDI = a middle class salary there.
Why does your SSDI always get mentioned in every other post of yours? And if SSDI affords a middle class lifestyle, than I must be part of the 1%.

Goodbye and good riddance.
Really glad you signed up here just to tell a bunch of people you've had no previous contact with that you are leaving. Goodbye?

At any rate, if you think recessions are an American phenomena, you're quite mistaken. Perhaps you could live in a stick hut in the middle of Africa, where economies will have no bearing on the quality of your life, but I certainly would not trade places with you.

So you think America is a crappy place. What exactly have you done to make it a better place? Is it someone elses job to make your dwelling to your liking? Sounds like it's time to rethink your strategy in life. Either way, if we are loosing a citizen who refuses to make an effort in improving their position in this country, I'm not so sure we are the ones at a loss. We have enough citizens dependent on the system as it is. Inflation will take care of them in time, but I'm glad to hear your searching for a better way. Good luck!

I'd certainly be down for expatriating to a Scandinavian country. The women are gorgeous and they have lots of hockey. Those are two things I love! However, the winters might be tough.

Not surprising when you see the picture at the top of its user profile page. That kind of person lives for attention of any kind.

Don't leave! If you do, it will be much harder to come back. My next door neighbors (a couple in their late 20s) up and left three and a half years ago to do charity work in Kenya. Originally, they told me it was a 6-months experimental trip to see how it is to live outside of the US and almost 4 years later, they are still not back. From the emails they sent me, they absolutely love it there and will NOT be returning.

That's why I am warning you not to leave because you may love living overseas and forget to return home...LOL
