A longstanding fashion-industry tradition of paying models in ‘trade’—with clothes instead of cash—has sunk many girls deep into debt. But things might be turning around, reports Misty White Sidell.
If they model St John or Chanel clothes they sure can get good money from that on ebay! But I agree, they should be paid adequate money, and I always thought modeling was a glamorous job.
I don't know about how much they should be paid. After all, what exactly are they doing for the world other than just standing there posing or walking down a runway? At least actors and musicians actually create something substantial with their own hands. Then again, why is there even a discussion about a model's career, if a typical "modeling career" lasts only a few years? Once you're in your 20s, you are not much of a commodity anymore.
If you want real insight into the world of modelling read Hungry by Crystal Renn. It mostly deals with the weight issue that models face but also discusses in depth the problems of not being paid real money and yet owing everyone (especially their agencies) $100s. Most girls who are not hugely famous and just starting out don't get paid at all or very little and yet they have to pay their agencies for the flats they live in and the airline tickets they use to get to shoots or runway shows. They also don't have health insurance so any injuries or illnesses they get on the job aren't covered and they certainly can't afford any treatment.

Yeah but it's a choice that they make and I'm sure most of them know what they're getting themselves into. Just like the girls that do drugs and take laxatives to stay thin (SO gross btw).

Most if not all of the clothing you seen on a runway model is ONE OF A KIND. If they tried to sell on eBAY, they would never get a modeling gig again.
